Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

Causes

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is caused by calcium crystals in the semicircular canlas of the inner ear. The semicircular canals of the inner ear help detect movement and send these signals to the brain. The utricle is a nearby part of the ear and contains calcium crystal deposits. Sometimes these calcium crystals get dislodged from the utricle and enters the semicircular canals in the inner ear. This then sends incorrect signals to the brain which you then perceive as vertigo. You may feel dizziness, unsteadiness and nausea.

Treatment

Dr John Epley has designed a series of movements to reposition the crystals back into the utricle. This procedure is called Epley's maneuver and helps treat the symptoms of vertigo. At Wellness Osteopathy, we help you perform Epley's maneuver to relieve your symptoms.
