Headache and Migraines

Headaches are a common and often debilitating condition that can affect people of all ages. They may arise from various causes including stress, dehydration, musculoskeletal tension, and poor posture. Osteopathy offers a holistic approach to managing and alleviating certain types of headaches by addressing underlying biomechanical and postural dysfunctions.

Types of Headaches

  • Tension Headaches
The most common type, often linked to stress or sustained poor posture. These headaches typically cause a dull, pressure-like pain around the head, neck, and shoulders.
  • Migraine Headaches
Characterised by intense, throbbing pain—often on one side of the head—migraines are frequently accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.
  • Cluster Headaches
Less common but extremely painful, cluster headaches occur in cyclical patterns or “clusters,” typically involving severe pain around one eye or temple.

Common Triggers

  • Stress – Leads to muscle tension, particularly in the neck and shoulders, which can contribute to tension-type headaches.
  • Dehydration – A common but often overlooked trigger for headaches.
  • Poor Posture – Places strain on the cervical spine and surrounding musculature, potentially leading to cervicogenic headaches.

How Osteopathy Can Help

Osteopathic treatment focuses on improving alignment, mobility, and circulation, particularly in the cervical spine, shoulders, and upper back. Techniques such as soft tissue release, joint mobilisation, muscle energy techniques, and postural advice can help reduce the frequency and intensity of certain headaches. In cases such as cervicogenic or tension-type headaches, osteopathic care can play a valuable role in both short-term relief and long-term prevention.

Additional Tips for Relief

  • Rest – Lying in a quiet, dark room may help ease headache symptoms.
  • Hydration – Ensuring adequate fluid intake can prevent headaches related to dehydration.
  • Lifestyle Management – Reducing stress and improving posture through daily habits and exercise can significantly decrease headache recurrence.

If you experience frequent or severe headaches, consulting an osteopath can help identify and manage contributing musculoskeletal factors, offering a tailored, drug-free approach to your care.
